Asian Food - Burmese Food

An enchanting evening Burma at night

In 1989 this country changed its name from Burma to Myanmar but the U.S. government still officially refers to the country as Burma. Myanmar occupies the Thailand/Cambodia portion of the Indochinese peninsula. India lies to the northwest and China to the northeast. Bangladesh, Laos, and Thailand are also neighbors. The Bay of Bengal touches the southwest coast. The fertile delta of the Irrawaddy River in the south contains a network of intercommunicating canals and nine principal river mouths.

The regional food is hot and spicy. Fish, rice, noodles and vegetables spiced with onions, ginger, garlic and chilies are the common local ingredients. Local dishes include lethok son (a sort of spicy vegetarian rice salad), mohinga (fish soup with noodles) and oh-no khauk swe (rice noodles, chicken and coconut milk).

Food is cheap in Myanmar. Previously, it was not easy to find good Burmese food in local restaurants, however, with better economy improvements, Burmese cuisine  are easily available. Chinese and Indian food are getting popular with the local too. Burma is also famous for its local fruits, you can even get delicious strawberries in Pyin U Lwin, Mandalay and Yangon. If you like avocados, you'll find them at the Inle area. There are great ice cream at Yangon and Mandalay.
