In Korea, rice is served as every meal. At breakfast it is sometimes served as gruel, especially for elderly people and children. At other meals steamed rice, cooked by absorption method, is accompanied by soup, meat, fish, vegetables and of course, kimchi. The famous Korean pickle based on baechu (Korean cabbage) are put down in readiness for winter and the year ahead. Radishes and cabbage are the favorite vegetables for pickling and large quantities are made for kimchi appears on the table for every meal. Korea has an abundance of fish and other seafood, and often the fish is combined in surprising ways with meat and poultry. Koreans use seaweed, especially the dried laver seaweed known as nori by the Japanese and kim by the Koreans. Beef is the popular meat in Korea. Pork and chicken are also used in their daily food. While Koreans charcoal grill or broil such meal as bulgogi or bulgalbi, everyday cooking includes boiling, steaming, stir frying and deep frying. Silver chopsticks and spoon are used for Korean meals because silver discolors in the presence of poison, so they are considered the safe way to eat. A formal dinner setting will also have silver bowls for rice and soup.
